Sur Legal Featured in ‘Screenprinting for Public Health’ Project with Emory University

On October 18, 2023, Dr. Amy Zeidan of Emory University invited Sur Legal to speak to her public health class entitled “Immigration as a Social and Structural Determinant of Health.” Our Executive Director, Shelly Anand, spoke to the class about the realities of occupational safety and health injuries and fatalities for immigrant workers, who experience 300 more workplace fatalities and 61,000 more workplace injuries per year than non-immigrant workers. The class was co-taught by the artist, Kelly Taylor Mitchell, as part of the Emory Art and Social Justice Fellowship. After the discussion, the students asked questions to develop a design for a screenprint for Sur Legal.

Screenprinting for Public Health

The students asked questions to develop a design for a screenprint for Sur Legal.

The print was then showcased alongside designs made for other immigrant organizations—and partners of Sur Legal—that presented for the class, including BAJI, Project South, GAIN, and El Refugio, along the Atlanta BeltLine on December 2 and December 5, 2023.

In addition to this class, Sur Legal and Dr. Zeidan are partnering on a project at Grady Hospital’s Emergency Department, where a significant percentage of those hospitalized are Latino workers who were hurt at work. Sur Legal worked with Dr. Zeidan and her team to develop a screening tool to ascertain worker knowledge of their health and safety rights and their access to health and safety equipment. Many of Dr. Zeidan’s students have been helping with the data collection and coding. Stay tuned for more news about this important project!
